A Brief History of the May Arboretum Society
The May Arboretum Society was established in 1986. In 1994 the Society was first granted 501(c)3 status by the IRS as a not-for-profit charitable organization and this status was confirmed in 2020. Through fundraising and educational events and donations, in addition to volunteer hours we support the continued improvement and growth of the Wilbur D. May Arboretum and Botanical Garden.
Our Mission
Our mission is to sustain and grow the Wilbur D. May Arboretum and Botanical Garden as well as promote its value through the creation of educational opportunities, which foster greater awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the role of plants in the high desert and mountain bio-regions. We also strive to promote the benefits that the Arboretum brings to our community and state.
In 2020, the Society...
- Donated close to $200,000 in workforce and infrastructure improvements to support the arboretum.
- Spearheaded the design for a cactus and succulent garden.
- Assured the arboretum was available as a sanctuary for respite and enjoyment during the pandemic.
- Hosted two art and education events during the pandemic - Lavender Day in July and the Fall Bulb Festival in October.
- Instituted a Virtual Learning Series to bring presentations and workshops directly into the homes of our Northern Nevada neighbors.
